4. MADRID'S MOUNTAINS

Go to PUENTE HOME PAGE

Madrid’s mountains hide some real surprises. La Pedriza’s granite labyrinth, Peņalara’s 7,900 foot peak and nearby glaciar cirque, the pine forests near Navacerrada pass, all are a short distance from Madrid. But the Guadarrama mountains hold other surprises: monasteries, palaces, old royal hunting lodges, a road dating back to Roman  times and other old footpaths, all await the curious visitor.

So what will it be? Walks with classic cultural content like the Escorial monastery and La Granja Palace, or a route that visits tiny villages on the edge of the province of Madrid? Easy or challenging walks, or a mixture?  Out of Madrid all the time, or based in the city for part of the time, transfering to the mountains for our walks? (this is not our usual way of doing things but in Madrid it works fine - and lets people take a day off to see the city sights, too).
