SANTIAGO TO THE SEA

Go to PUENTE HOME PAGE

Spain's Road of St. James pilgrimage route is famous world-wide, but fewer people know about the Road's pre-Christian traditions.

A mixture of legend and history tells us that people journeyed to what is now Galicia (northwest Spain) long before the discovery of St. James tomb in the 9th century. Walking into the setting sun, following the Milky Way, these early pilgrims went beyond Santiago to Finisterre on the Galician coast, the "End of the Earth", then believed to be the westernmost point of the European continent.

Finisterre town, the "End of the Earth"

Christian and pre-Christian traditions mix on the Road, but especially on the Finisterre extension. Beyond Santiago there are fewer people and less infrastructure. Though the distance is relatively short, the coastal extension is a bit wilder than the Road to Santiago. This is unsettling for some people, but depending on your travel preferences, maybe that's just what you want?  And isn't that what the original pilgrims experienced?

Buen Camino  (have a good journey).

SUGGESTED TRIP: 7-8 days total, about 6-7 days walking between Santiago and the sea. This includes some time on the coast.
DESCRIPTION TERRAIN / DIFFICULTY: Rolling terrain, fairly good surfaces. Some longish days due to spacing of suitable hotels and our goal of offering an authentic pilgrim experience.
SUGGESTED GROUP SIZE: For flexibility for hotels and to fit in on the Road, we suggest a maximum of 10 people.
