Escher exhibit in Madrid at Palacio de Gaviria! M.C. Escher, the Dutch artist who did mostly (if not all) black and white optical illusion drawings is showing at an old palace in central Madrid, formerly nightclub / restaurant and now apparently re-opened as an exhibit venue. Exhibit opened in February, I’ve seen long lines on weekends during the day so pick your time to go. When and where: Until June 25, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Sun10am – 8pm, Fri, Sat 10am – 9pm. Palacio de Gaviria, calle Arenal 9, metros Sol and Opera. Historical building, no elevator up to first floor where exhibit is showing. Tickets 12 euros. Espacio Miró Permanent display of sixty-five pieces by Joan Miró (1893 – 1983) plus sculptures and a painting by Alexander Calder, all in new exhibit venue at Fundacion Mapfre. Free when buying ticket for other exhibits (3 euros). Where and when: Paseo Recoletos 23. Monday 2-8pm, Tues – Sat 10am – 8pm. Sundays and holidays 11am – 7pm. Last access: 30 minutes before closing
Sorolla in París. Must-see if you like this painter – and if you haven’t discovered him yet, you must go. Emblematic paintings of the Mediterranean coast, interiors, family portraits. Special exhibit until March 19, but if you miss it (which you shouldn’t) you should for sure visit the museum another time – it’s his old residence and workshop. Ticket 3 euros. Bethune. La huella solidaria Photo exhibit about the life and work of Canadian doctor Norman Bethune, a Doctors without Borders doctor before that organization even existed. He worked in Spain during the Civil War and as a front-line surgeon in China. The exhibit also includes photos about the Canadians who fought in the Spanish Civil War in the International Brigades (Republic side). Haven’t been yet but this looks very interesting and the venue is pretty cool. Where and when: Cuartel Conde Duque cultural center, south wing exhibit space (metro Plaza de España and San Bernardo).
